It's Halloween 199X, and you killed someone during your morning shift.

Honestly it's inconvenient. This job was imperfect, sure, but you got to wear a mask with no questions asked and the pay was livable. But now you'll have to keep the body in the backrooms till your shift is done. Bummer.

"You're... the absolutely WICKED and AWESOME Bearwater Grizzly Killer, aren't you?!"

...and now enters the dreaded true crime fan.

A game about hiding things.

WARNING:

This game is a black comedy and contains the following:

Swearing

Cartoon violence and death

References to drugs and alcohol

Bright visuals (Chromatic Abberation can be toggled in Options)

We hope you enjoy!

Updates:

  • Added a patch fix on 10/3/2023, and reuploaded that patch with another fix a few hours later.

Known bugs:

  • Mac users may have problems loading the game due to the way that RPGMaker, unfortunately, just is built. We recommend reloading the game and trying again, but crashes are pretty inevitable in this version, so we recommend frequent saving.
  • Due to RPGMaker's interactions with 3DMV, lag is a pretty significant problem on lower end computers. We're looking into optimization options and are considering releasing a "stripped down" version of the game that removes a lot of visual elements in attempts to have a smoother running experience, but at the moment, a stronger computer is recommended to play this game. Sorry!

Manly brought me here. What a gem of a game! I'm obsessed with Pearl's design, like, for real!!! As well as the expressiveness of the art. And the 2.5D look. And the quirky silly dialogue. Beary nice little game 🐻

One tiny change I'd suggest is adding either character names to textboxes or making the boxes unique to each major character (like with a graphic, icon or even just colour). Most of the time it's fine since the talksprites change, but during the climax I did get a bit confused since there were three people talking. I think it could look really stylish too.

Really cool! I love the art direction, I always find it so incredible to see what RPG Maker can accomplish.
I love the dynamic between the two, and just the situation itself having the really dire things being reacted in a mundane way, and the mundane being reacted in a dire way. Though to be honest, retail really is that frantic in real life.

Thanks for the really enjoyable time, I can't wait to check out more of y'alls stuff!

A pretty solid game overall. I mostly like the game's art direction, which goes well with the quirky little narrative you've got going on. Seems to be a common theme with puzzle-based visual novels like these.

Loved the game so much that I cosplayed Grizz AND made a keychain of her (not for sale!)

hey if you ever do make some of these keychains for sale hit me up.....

If Team Cetacity ever allowed me to, I would! (I'd love to design merch for them)

But for now I'll only make merch for myself.

I just love this game. I found a gold

It's an incredible game, I loved it, the art, the dialogues, the characters, everything is beautiful!!! You are very talented, I hope you continue releasing more games, with so much talent you will go very far 🫶 I made this little drawings of Grizz and Pearl (it's not much and they don't look alike at all XDD), but it was very nice to draw them, thank you for this wonderful game!! 🎄.

Found this through Manlybadasshero and I think that speaks for itsel

I really love the fact that you never find out how or why Beary killed Courtney , the corpse is just there and that's it.

So thankful I have Wine installed! This game is amazing!

It's a fun game, It has a cute art style and is pretty funny. I also kinda ship pearl and beary

I love the game The art style is fantastic. As well, the dialog & characters are amazingly written.

Fun and quirky rpg maker game.  I really liked the dialog and artstyle.  Hope to more.

Hear me out, the game name MIGHT be called beary the hatchet because, the dude with the bear head is called beary. It's just a maybe though

never would've guessed /hj

Hey!

Could you also upload native Linux builds for the game? Pretty sure RPG Maker MZ/MV allow to export for Linux. If not, would it be possible to bundle for a web release? That also works natively on Linux, since you just need a browser!

(+1)(-1)

Is the killer a lady 🥺👉👈

(+2)

Grizz is a girl, yes!

(+3)

For a sec, I thought Grizz was a man with a mullet, thanks for clarification...

(+1)(-14)

darnit, that woulda been a cute ship >:(

(+16)(-2)

gay people exist dude

(+2)(-12)

I meant like marriage, gay marriage wasn't legal in the 90's unfortunately. they could be a perfectly cute couple still. I just meant like in a marriage scenario

(+4)

lesbians/wlw still existed in the 90s dude

🤍BEST GAME EVER🖤

The art of this game is really impressive and well done. All Endings here:

Meant to play this when it came out but better late than never and ITS SO GOOD! Damn I had so much fun with my chat on this game and the story was really funny and the art and dialogue were PERFECT! I just feel bad for misgendering Grizz so much cuz I thought she was a dude for so long it was hard to switch once I did learn RIP. She's a badass tho fr

No gamepad support? Interesting game concept. Cool arr style and character design-the colors somewhat pop. Will there be a sequel?

Killer aesthetic and a fun story! Very well put together and love the 2.5 style.
The lag was bearable for me, though a certain portion I felt like I was a bit unsure what to press so it took me a couple tries.

(+1)

super fun! the art looks amazing, and i love the story! the little minigame helps break the boredom of repeat playthroughs to get all the endings.

(+1)(-2)

pretty laggy for me

(+2)(-1)

This was such a fun game. The art style is really great and the story was great.

(+1)

Need a trailer of the game on youtube please :)

(+3)(-1)

This was so good! I loved the characters, the art style, the minigame being both simple and stressful, and the writing was great. Grizz and Pearl make such a fun contrast between their styles and handling of the situation.

(Copied from my Spooktober rating page review to help this game within itch.io's algorithm!)

Beary the Hatchet
is a fun little experience with gorgeous art direction and a delightfully tongue-in-cheek tone. If you like campy slasher B-movies, definitely give this a go!

Normally, I have reservations when VNs have gameplay segments, but I think it works for this story. For example, trying to find the required items for customers really puts you in the Grizzly Killer's shoes: she's only got so much time before her crimes are uncovered.

I think my favorite part of this VN was meeting the charming customers at the gas station. The anti-Halloween kids who might've eaten edibles by accident  and the toilet-rushing celebrity made me smile. Oh, and the character designs were fantastic too: they're delightful to look at and wonderfully varied.

All in all, a fun time! Great work to everyone involved in this project.

(On a side note, I hope a stable Mac build can be released in the future... I had to switch to my Windows PC because the Mac version was fairly unstable... but having worked in RPGMaker MV on a Mac, I can understand why this would be difficult. ^^;)

This was so so fun to play and i can't get over how full of life the dialogue is! The timers for the grocery parts were just right too! Amazing work! <33

(+3)

Nicely done! Fun characters and a really cool aesthetic.

That said, I’d love for some way to tell who’s speaking besides just the SFX; it makes it pretty complicated to follow dialogue, especially near the end. Maybe different font colors for each character?

Regardless, good job!

i just experienced a special moment i'll never be able to witness again for the first time. i smiled and i chuckled and i squealed..! the team worked so extremely hard for a month straight and it really did paid off. the product of your collective labor is absolutely beautiful. the game is quirky and humorous and even has it's heartwarming moments. every single aspect fit perfectly together like puzzle pieces, meshing to make this... homogenous mix... a very solid mix... a solid block of love and joy... i didn't even realize how fast time flew when playing this game. before i knew it..  i blinked and it was over... you know what they say..haha... time flies when you're having fun....

the character writing in this game is so strong. it's like. if i closed my eyes and someone read the dialogue to me, i could probably figure out which character is talking. each line had tons of personality which was tied to a very equally fun character. i really enjoyed every single interaction with the customers. they were funny and quirky, matched with designs extremely fun and equally memorable. they were all so visually unique. the character sprites really stood out, yet partnered really well with the 2.5d... which, should i mention, was a insanely good medium choice. the assets were sharp and geometric and the color palette really kicked it off with a boom. there were moments i had to pause and really admire the visuals whether it was the background, sprites, or the unique cgs which had fun composition as well. i really could go on and on about how well done everything is. good job guys, really. music? wow. story? wow. characters? wow... visuals? wow.. my tummy is churning with love.

(+2)

This game is a bop! I love the entire aesthetic -- the art, the music, the humor were so on point. (<-- absolutely grooving to Grizz and Pearl doing the mundane while also committing felonies) The underlying theme was also a great add and I totally felt for our murderous duo!!

(+1)

Thank you so much!! Everyone did an absolutely amazing job pulling everything together, it was really cool to get to work on this project :> Thank you for your kind words!

(+5)

What a delightfully devilish game! On my first run I never ran out of time for the fetching segments, but it definitely came close to that happening! It really gave me a scare when I forgot where the lighter was. Also, the interactions between Pearl and the Grizzly Killer are great. Perhaps a loser girl CAN win over the heart of a serial murderer.

...Uh, or at the very least, be friends with her.

(+2)

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you thought the timer had a good balance, and that you got a little bit scared at the end :> Everyone working on the project was so intimately familiar with where everything was that sometimes it was hard to tell how easy or hard something was, so hearing that is really neat!

I'm so so glad that you enjoyed Pearl's cringe fail antics paired with Grizz. They were really fun to write!

Thank you again for playing and enjoying our game! Makes my heart warm :D
